St. Landry Parish, LA Gravel and Landscape Rock Delivery

St. Landry Parish, LA Gravel and Landscape Rock Delivery

Louisiana Rock Supply brings gravel, stone and aggregate delivery in St. Landry Parish, LA.

Buyers here ask for 610 limestone by name, and that is the base size the parish runs on.

Ground across the southwest coastal prairie terraces is a silt loam surface over dense clay. Water perches in the top foot after rain and the ground stays soft.

Ground Conditions Across St. Landry Parish

Rain gets through the silt loam and stops at the dense subsoil. Water sits in the top foot, and on ground this flat there is no fall to carry it off.

That perched water is why the drainage layer matters more than the surface dressing. A clean open stone under a drive or a bed lets the water move down and away.

Erosion follows the same pattern. Sheet flow crosses bare terrace ground, ditches and coulees scour, and fresh grade rills before it is covered.

Work runs year round here, with wet spells rather than cold ones setting the schedule. Grade and base work go in when the ground is firm enough to hold a truck.

Materials Delivered in St. Landry Parish

Material is organized by family, so you can match the size to the job.

610 limestone is the Louisiana base size. It carries everything from stone dust up to about two inches, so the fines bind it and it packs hard as it is rolled.

Louisiana DOTD specifies aggregate quality in Section 1003 of the Louisiana Standard Specifications for Roads and Bridges. The soundness and abrasion requirements sit in Subsection 1003.01, and a source has to meet Section 1003 to be listed on the approved materials list.

Crushed concrete is a real product with its own market. It is recycled Portland cement concrete, not crushed quarry stone, and Louisiana permits it as a Class II base course material.

Sand and soil round out the order. Mason Sand is the finest washed sand, for mortar, brick and block work and a smooth paver setting bed.

Washed Sand, also called river sand, beds pipe and flatwork.

Garden Soil is a blended planting soil for raised beds and vegetable gardens, which suit ground that sits wet. RipRap is angular stone for bank and shoreline armour and canal edges.

Choosing the Right Material

St. Martin Parish and Lafayette Parish sit on the same coastal prairie terrace ground as St.

Landry Parish. The silt loam over dense clay, and the water that perches on it, are the same.

Avoyelles Parish is different ground. It is built on Recent alluvium laid down by the rivers, silty clay and clay loam, deep and heavy.

That alluvium holds sandier natural levee ridges along the old channels and backswamp clay in the low ground between them. A base course there sits on soil that drains differently from terrace claypan.

On terrace ground, plan the drainage layer first. A clean open stone such as #57 Limestone or Drain Rock moves water that the claypan will not take.

For a compacted layer under a drive or pad, 610 limestone or Crushed Concrete is the base choice. Select Fill goes under that base, not under a lawn.

Before you order

What buyers ask us before they order.

What is the difference between topsoil and fill dirt?

Topsoil is the growing layer, the part that supports lawns, beds and grade repair. Fill dirt is structural: select fill raises low ground and builds a pad, and it compacts rather than settling. On heavy clay ground, topsoil goes on top of a finished grade, while fill goes underneath it. They are not interchangeable, and putting fill where topsoil belongs leaves you with ground nothing will grow in.

What is 610 limestone and what is it used for in St. Landry Parish?

610 limestone is the dense graded Louisiana base size, carrying stone dust up to about two inches so the fines bind it. Louisiana DOTD specifies aggregate quality in Section 1003 of the Louisiana Standard Specifications for Roads and Bridges, with soundness and abrasion in Subsection 1003.01. It is ordered for driveways, parking pads, shed and building pads, and the compacted layer under flatwork.

How deep should a gravel driveway base be in St. Landry Parish?

Depth depends on your ground, your traffic and how wet the site stays, so there is no single figure that fits every drive. On terrace ground with a claypan close to the surface, the drainage layer under the base does as much work as the base itself. Each product page has a calculator to size your load once you know the area you are covering.
