Start with 610 limestone for a drive, a pad or the layer under flatwork. The local base size runs from stone dust up to about two inches, so the fines bind it and it hardens as it is rolled.
Most ground here needs work before it grows anything or holds anything. That starts with fill and soil, then moves to base and stone.
Select Fill raises low ground and builds a pad up out of the water. It compacts rather than settling, so it goes under a base course and not under a lawn.
Louisiana yards also list river silt and spillway dirt beside it as grade raising material.
Top Soil is the growing layer for lawns, beds and grade repair. The natural ground is more often heavy clay than anything a lawn wants, so a fresh layer does real work.
Garden Soil is a blended planting soil for raised beds and vegetable gardens. Raised beds matter here, because the natural ground sits wet.
For the base and the surface, 610 limestone and crushed concrete both build a compacted layer. Crushed concrete is recycled Portland cement concrete, crushed and screened with the fines left in, and Louisiana permits it as a Class II base course material.
It is not crushed limestone.
Clean stone handles water. #57 Limestone is about 3/4 inch with no fines, for a driveway surface, drainage and concrete work.
Drain Rock is washed clean for French drains, foundation perimeter drains, drywells and downspout runs.
Sand and decorative stone finish the job. Mason Sand is the finest washed sand, for mortar, brick and block work and a smooth paver setting bed.
River Rock is rounded decorative stone for beds, borders and ground cover where nothing has to compact.
Across the southwest coastal prairie terraces, rain gets through the silt loam surface and stops at a dense clay subsoil. Water perches in the top foot, and the ground stays soft long after the rain has gone.
On ground this flat there is no fall to carry it off. That is why the drainage layer is the part that has to work, and why a clean washed stone belongs under a French drain or a downspout run.
Bare terrace ground also moves. Sheet flow crosses a fresh grade, ditch and coulee edges scour, and rills cut before anything covers the surface.
Riprap and coarse angular stone armour banks and shorelines where rounded stone will not lock together.
Work runs year round here, with wet spells rather than cold ones setting the schedule. Build the pad out of the water first, then bring the base course over it.

Use clean washed stone with the fines taken out. Drain Rock suits French drains, foundation perimeter drains, drywells and downspout runs.
#57 Limestone, about 3/4 inch and clean, handles driveway drainage and concrete work, and #67 Stone is a little finer for drainage trenches and pipe bedding. The claypan under the silt loam holds water up, so the drainage layer has to move it.

A clear, level spot the truck can reach and tip in, with nothing parked in the way and no low branches or wires over the approach. If the drop is behind a gate, tell us the width when you order. Soft ground after rain is the usual reason a delivery in Sunset has to be moved, so point out anywhere the truck should not drive.
