Open the calculatorLouisiana Rock Supply brings gravel and aggregate delivery in Palmetto, LA, with 610 limestone leading the list. That is the base this part of Acadiana builds drives and pads on.
You order online by the ton or the yard, and a dump truck tips the load at your site. The ground here is coastal prairie terrace, so the material you choose has to suit a soft, flat yard.
Start with the base layer, because on terrace ground it decides how the rest of the job holds up. 610 Limestone, also called #610 or 610 base, is the Louisiana base course: stone dust up to about two inches, with the fines left in so it binds and hardens as it is rolled.
It goes under driveways, parking pads, shed and building pads, and the compacted layer beneath flatwork. Crushed Concrete, sold locally as recycled base or 610 concrete, is recycled Portland cement concrete crushed to a dense graded size with the fines kept in.
It is a Class II base course material in Louisiana, and it is not crushed limestone.
For the surface of a drive, #57 Limestone is the clean open graded size at about 3/4 inch with no fines. It also handles drainage and concrete work.
Driveway Gravel surfaces an existing drive or tops a finished base course.
Wet spots need a clean stone that lets water move. Drain Rock is washed stone with the fines taken out, for French drains, foundation perimeter drains, drywells and downspout runs.
#4 Crushed Stone, roughly 1 1/2 inch, suits heavy drainage and very wet ground.
Sand and soil round out a job. Mason Sand is the finest washed sand, for mortar, brick and block work and a smooth paver setting bed.
Washed Sand, also called river sand, beds pipe and flatwork. Top Soil is the growing layer for lawns and beds, and Garden Soil is a blended planting soil for raised beds.
For beds and borders, River Rock is rounded decorative stone for ground cover where nothing has to compact. Shredded Mulch dresses beds, tree rings and slopes.
Across the southwest coastal prairie terraces, the ground is level Pleistocene terrace with a silt loam surface over dense clay. A tight claypan often sits close enough to the top to stop roots and water alike.
Rain gets through the silt loam, hits the dense subsoil and stops. Water perches in the top foot, and on ground this flat there is no fall to carry it off, so the yard stays soft long after the rain has gone.
That is why the drainage layer is the part that has to work. A clean open stone such as #67 Stone or drain rock moves water instead of holding it, while a fines-bearing base holds and binds.
Do not expect a clean stone to compact into a base, and do not expect 610 limestone to drain.
Bare fresh grade also takes sheet flow, ditch and coulee scour, and rill cutting before anything covers it. Work runs year round here, with wet spells rather than cold ones setting the schedule.
Bulk material arrives by dump truck and is tipped in one pile at the site. Have the drop area clear and reachable before the truck arrives, and keep the pile where you want the material to stay.
