Start with 610 limestone, the local base material. It goes under driveways, pads and flatwork.
The ground here is wind laid silt, fine and easily worked, so what you put on top of it matters.
The silt across the loess bluffs above the Mississippi is deep, fine and easy to move. It also erodes faster than almost any other soil in the state.
Strip the cover and water cuts a channel. A drive built across a slope becomes that channel.
Wet silt will not compact. It moves when it is wet.
Work here runs year round, but the material has to be placed while the ground is fit.
A thin base shows its weakness fast on this ground. The surface ruts, the edges break down, and water finds the soft spot underneath.
The fix is a base course that binds and a drainage layer that moves water away. That is where 610 limestone and clean stone earn their place.
Bedding under pavers and flatwork is where the choice gets specific. The setting bed has to hold a level surface, and the base under it has to stay put.
610 Limestone, also called #610 or 610 base, is the Louisiana base size. It runs from stone dust up to about two inches, so the fines bind it and it hardens as it is rolled.
Use it under driveways, parking pads, shed and building pads, and the compacted layer beneath flatwork. It is the material the base course is built from.
Crushed Concrete, or recycled base, is crushed and screened Portland cement concrete with the fines left in. Louisiana permits it as a Class II base course material.
It is recycled concrete, not crushed quarry stone. Do not treat the two as the same product.
For the setting bed itself, Mason Sand is the finest washed sand. It goes under brick, block and paver work where a smooth bed is wanted.
Washed Sand, also called river sand, beds pipe and flatwork and backfills where a clean fine material is needed.
Stone Screenings are the crusher fines that pass the finest screen. They bed pavers, fill joints and pack the top of a path.
For joints and thin bedding layers, #89 Crushed Stone is the fine clean size. #8 Crushed Stone is a little coarser, at roughly 3/8 inch.
Where water has to move, Drain Rock is clean washed stone with the fines taken out. It serves French drains, foundation perimeter drains, drywells and downspout runs.

What buyers ask us before they order.
Start with 610 limestone as the base. It runs from stone dust up to about two inches, and the fines bind it so it hardens as it is rolled. Top it with a clean stone such as #57 Limestone or Driveway Gravel. The silt ground here erodes easily, so the base course is what keeps the drive from rutting.
Quantities are ordered by the ton or by the yard. Each product page has a calculator, and it is the right place to size your load. Have your project measurements ready before you start, then order the figure it gives you. If your project covers more than one material, size each one separately.
We would rather move a delivery than tear up your ground. If the site is too wet for the truck on the day, we will call you and rebook. Tell us in advance about any part of the approach that does not drain and we will plan around it.
