Open the calculatorLouisiana Rock Supply handles gravel and aggregate delivery in Jamestown, LA for two kinds of buyers: contractors building pads and flatwork, and homeowners patching a drive or setting a patio. Most of that work starts with 610 limestone, the local base material.
The sandy loam here drains well until it hits the clay beneath, so what sits under a slab decides how it holds up.
Jamestown sits in Bienville Parish, on the sandy loam uplands of the northern and western part of Louisiana. The surface takes water, and the clay below it does not.
Water moves sideways down the slopes and gathers in the draws instead of soaking away.
That is why a thin base shows its problems fast. Water reaches the clay, sits, and the surface above it moves.
The fix is a base course that carries the load and a drainage layer that gives water somewhere to go.
Bare sandy slopes cut quickly once the cover is gone, so gullies open on graded ground. Stream and ditch scour in the draws is the other place work moves.
Work runs year round here, and wet clay in the draws is what stops a compaction pass.
Bedding under pavers and flatwork is where most of this work turns on the material choice. A paver setting bed has to be fine, clean and even, and the base under it has to be something that binds.
Get either one wrong and the surface rocks or settles.
610 limestone is the Louisiana base term, also called #610, 610 base or CR610. The stone dust and fines up to about two inches bind it, so it hardens as it is rolled.
It goes under driveways, parking pads, shed and building pads, and the compacted layer beneath flatwork.
Crushed concrete, sold locally as recycled base or 610 concrete, is recycled Portland cement concrete crushed and screened with the fines left in. Louisiana permits it as a Class II base course material.
It is not crushed limestone, and it is not a substitute name for one.
For the setting bed itself, mason sand is the finest washed sand and the usual choice under brick, block and pavers. Washed sand, also called river sand, beds pipe and flatwork and backfills where a clean fine material is wanted.
Stone screenings are the crusher fines that pass the finest screen, used as a bedding and joint material under pavers and as a packing top for a path. #89 crushed stone is a fine clean stone for paver joints and thin bedding layers.
Drainage is the other half of the job. Drain rock is clean washed stone with the fines taken out, for French drains, foundation perimeter drains and downspout runs.
Where the ground stays wet, that layer is the part that has to work.
#57 limestone is the clean open graded size at about 3/4 inch with no fines, and it is the usual choice for drainage and concrete work. #67 stone runs a little finer for drainage trenches and pipe bedding.
For lawns and beds, top soil is the growing layer over ground that is more often heavy clay than anything a lawn wants. Garden soil is a blended planting soil for raised beds, which suit ground that sits wet.

What buyers ask us before they order.
It depends on whether you are building the base or dressing the surface. 610 limestone is the local base material, with fines that bind it into a hard layer under a drive. #57 limestone is the clean open graded stone used as a surface and for drainage. Many drives here use both: a base course first, then a clean stone on top.
Quantities are ordered by the ton or by the yard, and each product page has a calculator to size the load. Have your measurements ready before you order. Bulk material arrives as one tipped pile, so knowing the quantity up front keeps the drop manageable.
We would rather move a delivery than tear up your ground. If the site is too wet for the truck on the day, we will call you and rebook. Tell us in advance about any part of the approach that does not drain and we will plan around it.
