Either way, 610 limestone is the base this market names by number. The sandy loam over clay in this part of the state shapes what you need underneath.
Start with the base course, because everything flat you build here sits on it. 610 limestone, also called #610, 610 base or CR610, is crushed limestone base with stone dust up to about two inches.
The fines bind it, so it hardens as it is rolled.
That makes 610 Limestone the material for driveways, parking pads, shed and building pads, and the compacted layer under flatwork.
Crushed concrete, also called recycled base or 610 concrete, is a second option for the same job. It is recycled Portland cement concrete, crushed and screened to a dense graded size with the fines left in.
Louisiana permits it as a Class II base course material. It is not crushed quarry stone, and it is not the same material as 610 limestone.
See Crushed Concrete.
Once the base is in, the surface is a separate choice. #57 limestone, also called #57 stone or 57 rock, is the clean open graded size at about 3/4 inch with no fines.
It drains, which suits a driveway surface, drainage work and concrete. #57 Limestone is a clean stone, so it will not bind into a hard base the way 610 does.
For finer clean stone, #67 limestone goes into drainage trenches, pipe bedding and concrete. #67 Stone sits a little finer than #57.
Where water has to move fast, #4 limestone is a coarse clean stone at roughly 1 1/2 inch for heavy drainage and erosion work. #4 Crushed Stone is also used to stabilise very wet ground.
Sand and soil round out a site. Mason Sand is the finest washed sand, for mortar, brick and block work and for a smooth paver setting bed.
Washed Sand, also called river sand, beds pipe and flatwork.
For growing ground, Top Soil is the layer lawns and beds need, and Garden Soil is a blended planting soil for raised beds. Raised beds matter here, because the natural ground sits wet.
Across the northern and western uplands, the surface is sandy loam over Tertiary sands and clays. The ground rolls rather than lying flat, with sandy loam ridges and clay in the draws.
That layering decides where water goes. The sandy loam surface takes water in, and the clay beneath it does not, so water moves sideways down the slopes and gathers in the draws.
Slope, not a water table, is what moves water here. A driveway cut across a slope gets water crossing it, and a pad in a draw sits in the path of everything draining off the ridge above.
Erosion follows the same pattern. Bare sandy slopes cut into gullies quickly once the cover is gone, and the draws see stream and ditch scour.
So a clean stone that drains and a fines-bearing base that binds are doing two different jobs, and mixing them up costs you the driveway. Drain Rock is washed clean for French drains, foundation perimeter drains and drywells.
Work runs year round here. Wet clay in the draws is what stops a compaction pass, so a base placed while the ground is saturated will not firm up the way it should.
Bulk material arrives by dump truck and tips in one pile at the address you give at checkout. The driver does not spread or place it, so pick a spot that keeps the pile clear of the work.
