If you are planning a driveway, a parking pad, or a patio base in Destrehan, LA, the material under it decides how the job holds up. Louisiana Rock Supply sells gravel and aggregate delivery in Destrehan, LA, and 610 limestone is the base most of that work starts from.

This is the deltaic plain, where the ground is soft and the water table sits high. That shapes what you put down and how much of it you need.

Materials for Destrehan Projects

610 limestone is the Louisiana base course. It runs from stone dust up to about two inches, and the fines bind the whole mix together.

That same 610 limestone goes under driveways, parking pads, shed and building pads, and the compacted layer beneath flatwork. Louisiana yards also call it #610, 610 base, or CR610.

Order it as 610 Limestone.

Road Base is recycled Portland cement concrete, crushed and screened to a dense graded size with the fines left in. It is a different material from crushed limestone, not another name for it.

Louisiana permits Road Base as a Class II base course material. It works as a base layer the same way 610 does, and it is sold as Road Base.

Where you need a clean stone with no fines, #57 limestone is the open graded size at about 3/4 inch. It goes on a driveway surface, in drainage work, and around concrete.

Buyers here ask for it as #57 stone, 57 rock, or clean limestone. It is listed as #57 Limestone.

#67 limestone is a clean stone a little finer than #57. It suits drainage trenches, pipe bedding, and concrete work.

#4 limestone is the coarse clean stone at roughly 1 1/2 inch. It handles heavy drainage, erosion work, and ground that stays wet.

At the fine end, #8 limestone is a small clean stone around 3/8 inch for fine drainage and paver bedding, and #89 limestone is finer still for paver joints and thin bedding layers.

Drain rock is clean washed stone with the fines taken out. It goes in French drains, foundation perimeter drains, drywells, and downspout runs.

On ground with a water table this close to the surface, the drainage layer is the part that has to work. See Drain Rock.

Stone screenings are the crusher fines that pass the finest screen. They bed and joint pavers and pack the top of a path.

For sand, mason sand is the finest washed sand, used in mortar, brick and block work, and a smooth paver setting bed. Washed sand, which Louisiana yards also call river sand, beds pipe and flatwork and backfills where a clean fine material is wanted.

Select fill raises low ground and builds a pad up out of the water. It compacts rather than settling, so it belongs under a base course and not under a lawn.

Spillway dirt is a second Louisiana yard term for coarse fill from spillway and borrow areas, sold here as Select Fill. River silt is the fine alluvial fill dug from the river bottoms.

Top soil is the growing layer for lawns, beds, and grade repair. Garden soil is a blended planting soil for raised beds and vegetable gardens, which matter here because the natural ground sits wet.

Natural Pea Gravel is rounded pea sized stone for paths, dog runs, play areas, and pipe bedding. River rock is rounded decorative stone for beds, borders, and ground cover where nothing has to compact.

Large river rock is rounded cobble for dry creek beds and decorative edging. Rounded stone does not lock together, so it is not bank armour; riprap is the angular stone for that, along canal and bayou edges and slopes.

Ground and Conditions in Destrehan

Across the deltaic plain, the marsh, and the Chenier coast, the water table is at or near the surface and the ground is already saturated. Nothing here drains downward.

Water leaves by pump, canal, or not at all. A pad built on muck settles under its own weight before anything is parked on it.

The soil is organic muck and soft clay, under consolidated and highly compressible. The firm ground sits on natural levee ridges, old distributary channels, and the cheniers, the shell and sand ridges of the southwest coast.

That is why a base course and a drainage layer carry so much of the load here. Select fill lifts a pad out of the wet ground before 610 limestone goes over it.

Erosion comes from coastal and wetland loss, storm surge, canal and bayou bank retreat, and wave action along open water. Riprap is the angular material for that work.

Work runs year round in this part of the state, interrupted by rain and by high water rather than by cold. Louisiana design criteria are about wind and water, so no frost depth applies.
