Start with washed stone. Across the deltaic plain, the water table sits at or near the surface.
Water does not leave by draining down. It leaves by pump or canal, or it stays.
That makes the drainage layer the part of a job that has to work.
Washed stone is where a wet job starts. Build the drainage layer first, then the surface over it.
Start coarse. Drain rock and #4 Crushed Stone are clean washed and open graded, so water moves through instead of sitting in fines.
Use them for a French drain, a foundation perimeter drain, a drywell or a downspout run.
Then the base. 610 Limestone is the local base, also called 610 base or CR610.
Stone dust up to about two inches, with the fines left in, so it binds and hardens as it is rolled. Driveways, parking pads, shed pads.
Road Base is the other base option. It is recycled Portland cement concrete, crushed and screened with the fines left in, and Louisiana permits it as a Class II base course material.
Order it by name, not as a limestone.
For a surface, use a clean stone. #57 Limestone runs about 3/4 inch with no fines, and 3/4 inch crushed stone is sold by inch size as well.
#67 Stone is a little finer, for drainage trenches and pipe bedding.
Fine sizes finish the edges. Stone Screenings bed pavers and pack a path.
Washed Sand, also called river sand, beds pipe and flatwork. Mason Sand is the finest washed sand, for mortar, brick and block.
Where the ground is soft, raise it first. Select Fill compacts rather than settling, so it goes under a base course and not under a lawn.
Spillway dirt and river silt are the other grade raising terms yards here use.

Louisiana Rock Supply delivers across St. Charles Parish, including Luling, Destrehan, St.
Rose, Hahnville and Norco. The truck leaves one pile where it can reach the work.
Work here runs year round. Rain and high water interrupt a schedule far more than cold does, so time a delivery around water, not temperature.
The ground is the reason for that. Across the deltaic plain, the soil is organic muck and soft clay, under consolidated and highly compressible.
Firm ground shows up on natural levee ridges and old distributary channels.
So the water table sits at or near the surface and the ground is already saturated. Nothing drains downward.
A pad built on muck settles under its own weight before anything is parked on it.
That is what the drainage layer is for. Washed stone carries water away, select fill gets you out of it, and 610 limestone gives you a base that hardens instead of pumping.
Bank edges are a separate problem.
Coastal and wetland loss, storm surge, canal and bayou bank retreat and wave action keep eating at open water edges. Use angular stone there.
Riprap is for bank and shoreline armour.
Rounded stone does not lock together, so river rock is not bank armour. Keep River Rock and Large River Rock for beds, borders and dry creek beds.

Two materials do different jobs. 610 limestone is the base: stone dust up to about two inches with the fines left in, so it binds and hardens as it is rolled.
#57 Limestone is the clean open graded surface, about 3/4 inch with no fines. On ground this wet, build the base first, then top it.
