Open the calculatorFor gravel and aggregate delivery in Prairieville, LA, Louisiana Rock Supply serves two kinds of buyer: the contractor building another pad or patio, and the homeowner finishing one. Both end up weighing the same question, which material sits under the finished surface.
We stock 610 limestone, the local base, along with clean stone, sand, fill and decorative rock. Everything arrives in bulk, ordered online.
Across the Mississippi and Red River alluvial plains, the ground is recent alluvium: silty clay and clay loam laid down by the rivers, heavy and slow to move water. On flat land like this, the water table sits close to the surface and the clay will not take rain away.
For a patio or a flatwork pour, that is where a thin base fails first. Water stops in the clay, the bedding layer turns soft, and the surface above it moves and dips.
A base that is too shallow to bridge the wet clay has nothing to hold onto.
The fix is structural, not cosmetic. A compacted base course spreads the load and keeps the bedding layer above the saturated zone, and a clean drainage stone gives the water a path out from under the slab.
The base layer is doing the work, so it has to be the right material at the right build.
Work runs year round here. Heavy rain and saturated clay, not cold, are what stop a compaction pass, so plan flatwork around the wet spells.
Start with the base. 610 limestone, also called #610, 610 base or CR610, is crushed limestone base with the fines left in, running from stone dust up to about two inches.
Those fines bind the material and it hardens as it is rolled, which is why it goes under driveways, parking pads, shed and building pads, and the compacted layer beneath flatwork.
Crushed concrete is the other base course option. It is recycled Portland cement concrete, crushed and screened to a dense graded size with the fines still in, and Louisiana permits it as a Class II base course material.
It is not crushed limestone, and it is not sold as such.
Above the base, the bedding layer is what the finished surface actually rests on. Stone screenings, the crusher fines that pass the finest screen, bed pavers and pack into the joints of a path.
Mason sand is the finest washed sand, and it gives brick, block and mortar work a smooth setting bed. Washed sand, which yards here also call river sand, beds pipe and flatwork and works as a paver setting bed where a clean fine material is wanted.
Where water has to move, you want a clean stone with no fines. #8 limestone, roughly 3/8 inch, suits fine drainage and paver bedding.
#89 limestone is finer still, for paver joints and thin bedding layers. 3/8 inch crushed stone does similar work under pavers and on a walkway top.
The coarser clean sizes handle heavier drainage and wet ground. #57 limestone is about 3/4 inch with the fines screened out, a driveway surface stone and the usual choice around concrete work.
#67 limestone is a little finer, for drainage trenches and pipe bedding. #4 limestone, roughly 1 1/2 inch, takes on heavy drainage, erosion work and very wet ground.
Drain rock is washed clean for French drains, foundation perimeter drains, drywells and downspout runs, and on ground with the water table this close, that drainage layer is the part that has to work.
For planting and finish work, select fill raises low ground and builds a pad up out of the water, and it compacts rather than settling. Top soil is the growing layer for lawns and beds over ground that is more often heavy clay than anything a lawn wants.
Garden soil is a blended planting soil for raised beds, which matter here because the natural ground sits wet. Natural Pea Gravel and river rock handle paths, beds and borders, while riprap arms banks and canal edges with angular stone.

What buyers ask us before they order.
Start with 610 limestone as the base. Its fines bind the material and it hardens as it is rolled, which suits the heavy clay under most drives here. Top it with a clean stone such as #57 limestone for the driving surface, and use drain rock where water needs a path out. Crushed concrete is a permitted Class II base course alternative.
Each product page has a calculator, so you can size the load from your own project numbers before ordering. Quantities are ordered by the ton or by the yard. Have your measurements ready, work through the calculator, and the quantity you need will come out of it.
A clear, level spot the truck can reach and tip in, with nothing parked in the way and no low branches or wires over the approach. If the drop is behind a gate, tell us the width when you order. Soft ground after rain is the usual reason a delivery in Prairieville has to be moved, so point out anywhere the truck should not drive.
