Open the calculatorLouisiana Rock Supply handles gravel and aggregate delivery in Bastrop, LA, and the ground here shapes what you order. Across the northern and western uplands the surface is sandy loam over clay, so water moves sideways down the slopes instead of soaking away.
That is why a drive or pad starts with 610 limestone, the local base that binds and hardens as it is rolled.
Slope, swale and bank work here calls for coarse, angular stone that grips instead of rolling. Riprap is the angular size for bank and shoreline armour, canal and bayou edges, and slope protection.
Rounded stone behaves differently. Large river rock is a rounded cobble for dry creek beds, decorative edging and low banks, and because rounded stone does not lock together it is not bank armour.
For heavy drainage and erosion work, #4 crushed stone is a coarse clean stone at roughly 1 1/2 inch. It also stabilises very wet ground where a large open stone is wanted.
Railroad ballast is another coarse angular option, for track beds, heavy equipment pads and wet ground. Where a swale needs to move water rather than hold it, drain rock is clean washed stone with the fines taken out.
Above the drainage layer, 610 limestone is the compacted base for driveways, parking pads, shed and building pads, and the layer under flatwork. Its stone dust runs up to about two inches, so the fines bind it.
Road Base is a second base option, sold locally as recycled base or 610 concrete. It is recycled Portland cement concrete crushed and screened with the fines left in, and Louisiana permits it as a Class II base course material.
For a driveway surface, #57 limestone is the clean open graded size at about 3/4 inch with no fines. It is also the usual choice for drainage and concrete work, and #67 stone is a little finer for drainage trenches and pipe bedding.
Finer still, #8 crushed stone runs about 3/8 inch for fine drainage and paver bedding. Stone screenings are the crusher fines that pass the finest screen, used to bed pavers and pack a path.
Soil and sand round out a project. Select fill raises low ground and builds a pad up out of the water, and it compacts rather than settling.
Top soil is the growing layer for lawns and beds over ground that is more often heavy clay than anything a lawn wants.

A dump truck tips the load on site in one pile. Bastrop sits in Morehouse Parish, and delivery covers the city and the surrounding area, including Mer Rouge, Collinston, Bonita, Oak Ridge and Jones.
Work runs year round across the northern and western uplands. Wet clay in the draws is what stops a compaction pass, so timing a delivery around that matters more than the calendar.
The sandy loam surface takes water and the clay beneath it does not, so water moves sideways down the slopes and gathers in the draws. Slope rather than a water table is what moves it here.
Bare sandy slopes gully quickly once the cover is gone, and the draws see stream and ditch scour. Coarse angular stone at the bank and a clean drainage layer under the surface are what hold that in check.
Because the ground is lighter and better drained than the southern half of the state, a base course still needs to be built to compact. Select fill goes under a base course, not under a lawn.

What buyers ask us before they order.
Drain rock is clean washed stone with the fines removed, for French drains, foundation perimeter drains, drywells and downspout runs. For a coarser open layer, #4 crushed stone handles heavy drainage and wet ground, and #67 stone suits drainage trenches and pipe bedding. In a swale or on a bank, riprap is the angular stone that holds.
The truck tips the load in one pile, so have the spot clear and reachable before it backs in. Clear overhead lines and any low branches along the approach. If the ground is soft from rain, pick a firmer spot for the pile so the truck can pull out again.
Wherever you tell us, as long as the truck can safely reach it. Mark the spot before the delivery and someone should be on site to point the driver to it. If nobody can be there, leave clear instructions when you order and we will follow them.
