On ground this soft, the base you start with decides how the rest holds up.
Water sits close to the surface here, so a drive or pad has to be built up, not dug down.
Base and driveway surfacing is where a Lockport project starts. 610 limestone, also called #610 or 610 base, is the Louisiana base size: stone dust up to about two inches, so the fines bind it and it hardens as it is rolled.
It goes under drives, parking pads, shed and building pads, and flatwork. Order it from the 610 Limestone page.
Crushed concrete, also called recycled base or 610 concrete, is a base layer of recycled Portland cement concrete crushed and screened with the fines left in. Louisiana permits it as a Class II base course material.
It is not crushed limestone; it is recycled concrete. See Crushed Concrete.
For the surface layer, #57 limestone is the clean open graded size, about 3/4 inch with no fines. It drains and it works for concrete.
#67 limestone is a little finer, for drainage trenches, pipe bedding and concrete. Both are clean stone, so neither one binds into a base.
See #57 Limestone and #67 Stone.
Drain rock is clean washed stone with the fines taken out, for French drains, foundation perimeter drains, drywells and downspout runs. Where the water table sits near the surface, the drainage layer is the part that has to work.
See Drain Rock.
Select fill raises low ground and builds a pad up out of the water. It compacts rather than settling, so it goes under a base course and not under a lawn.
Louisiana yards also list river silt and spillway dirt beside it as grade raising material. See Select Fill.
For beds and lawns, top soil is the growing layer, and garden soil is a blended planting soil for raised beds. Raised beds matter here because the natural ground sits wet.
Mason sand and washed sand cover mortar work, paver setting beds and pipe bedding. Natural Pea Gravel and river rock handle paths, dog runs and ground cover.
Lockport sits in Lafourche Parish, on the deltaic plain where the marsh and the Chenier coast meet. The ground is organic muck and soft clay, under consolidated and highly compressible.
The firm ground is on natural levee ridges and old distributary channels.
The water table is at or near the surface, and the ground is already saturated. Nothing here drains downward.
Water leaves by pump, canal or not at all.
That changes how you build. A pad on muck settles under its own weight before anything is parked on it, so the fill layer has to be compactable material, not soil that keeps moving.
Drain rock and clean stone carry water away instead of holding it.
Erosion is the other driver across this part of the state: storm surge, canal and bayou bank retreat, and wave action along open water. Riprap is angular stone for bank and shoreline armour and slope protection.
Rounded stone does not lock together, so river rock is not bank armour.
Work runs year round and rain or high water is what stops it. There is no frost depth to build around in Louisiana; the design concerns are wind and water.

A clear, level spot the truck can reach and tip in, with nothing parked in the way and no low branches or wires over the approach. If the drop is behind a gate, tell us the width when you order. Soft ground after rain is the usual reason a delivery in Lockport has to be moved, so point out anywhere the truck should not drive.
