Start with 610 limestone. It is the base this part of Beauregard Parish is built on, and it arrives ready to compact under a drive, a pad or flatwork.
Ragley sits on the southwest coastal prairie terraces. The ground here is level terrace country with a silt loam surface over dense clay.
Rain soaks through the silt loam and stops at the claypan. Water perches in the top foot of soil, and the ground stays soft long after the rain has passed.
On ground this flat there is no fall to carry that water off. A thin base over soft subsoil fails by pumping and rutting, because the stone has nowhere to shed the water it takes on.
The fix is a base that binds and a drainage layer that moves water away. 610 limestone hardens as it is rolled because the stone dust up to about two inches locks the material together.
Bare grade also cuts fast. Sheet flow across fresh terrace ground scours the surface, and ditches and coulees cut deeper once water finds them.
Work runs year round here. Wet spells set the schedule more than cold does, so a covered grade matters when the forecast turns.
Fines and screenings do the fine work on this ground. Stone Screenings are the crusher fines that pass the finest screen, and they bed pavers and pack a path into a firm surface.
For a walkway surface, Walkway Gravel is a finer gravel that packs underfoot. 3/8" Crushed Stone tops a walkway or beds pavers on the same principle.
Nothing here holds a joint or a path like a fines-bearing material. A clean stone sheds water and will not pack, so keep the two jobs separate.
Under the paths, 610 limestone is the compacted layer that carries the load. 610 Limestone also builds driveways, parking pads, shed pads and the base under flatwork.
Supporting materials cover the rest of a Ragley job:
Crushed concrete is recycled Portland cement concrete, not crushed quarry stone. It is specified locally as a Class II base course material and works as a base layer with the fines left in.

What buyers ask us before they order.
Have the delivery point clear and reachable, with room for a dump truck to back in and tip. Mark the spot you want the pile if it helps you keep the drive open. The driver tips the load in one pile and does not spread it. Have your grade ready if the material is going onto fresh ground, since wet terrace soil will not carry a truck.
610 limestone is the base under pavers here. It compacts into a hard layer, and the stone dust up to about two inches binds it so it stays put over soft clay. Above it, Stone Screenings bed the pavers and Mason Sand gives a smooth setting bed for a patio or walkway. Clean stone like #57 Limestone will not compact, so keep it for drainage.
We would rather move a delivery than tear up your ground. If the site is too wet for the truck on the day, we will call you and rebook. Tell us in advance about any part of the approach that does not drain and we will plan around it.
