Open the calculatorLouisiana Rock Supply handles gravel and aggregate delivery in Fort Necessity, LA, and drainage is the job that shapes most of it. The ground across the Mississippi and Red River alluvial plains sits flat and holds water.
When a driveway, a pad or a downspout run has to shed that water, the stone you choose decides whether it works.
Start with 610 limestone, the local base material. It is stone dust up to about two inches, and the fines bind it so it hardens as it is rolled.
Washed stone is where a wet site gets fixed. Clean stone has the fines taken out, so water moves through the voids instead of sitting in the material.
That is the whole point of a French drain, a drywell or a downspout run.
For a French drain or a drywell, Drain Rock is the washed stone to use. It is clean and open, so it passes water and holds the trench open while it does.
Coarser sizes suit heavier water. #4 Crushed Stone runs about 1 1/2 inch and works for heavy drainage, erosion control and ground that stays wet.
#57 Limestone is the clean open graded size at about 3/4 inch, and it handles drainage as well as concrete work.
Finer clean stone has its own places. #67 Stone is a little finer than #57 and suits drainage trenches, pipe bedding and concrete.
#8 Crushed Stone is roughly 3/8 inch for fine drainage and paver bedding, and #89 Crushed Stone goes into paver joints and thin bedding layers.
Below the drainage layer, a drive or a pad needs a base that compacts. 610 Limestone is that base, and it also works for parking pads and shed pads.
Crushed Concrete is recycled Portland cement concrete crushed to a dense graded size with the fines left in, and Louisiana permits it as a Class II base course material.
Low ground needs raising before anything goes on top. Select Fill builds a pad up out of the water because it compacts rather than settling.
Top Soil is the growing layer for lawns and beds, and Garden Soil fills raised beds over ground that sits wet.

Pick your delivery date at checkout, and a dump truck tips the material on site.
Bulk loads arrive as one tipped pile. Have the spot clear before the truck gets there, because the driver does not spread or place the material.
The ground here is recent alluvium: silty clay and clay loam laid down by the rivers, deep and heavy. Sandier ridges sit along the old channels, and backswamp clay fills the low ground between them.
That clay will not take water. The land is flat, the ridges are the only ground that drains by itself, and the low ground holds rain until it is ditched or pumped away.
A high water table sits close to the surface across the Mississippi and Red River alluvial plains.
So the drainage layer is the part that has to work. Clean washed stone is what moves water; a fines-bearing base is what carries a load.
Keep the two jobs separate and the site behaves.
Work runs year round here. Heavy rain and saturated clay stop a compaction pass, not cold, so time a delivery around the weather rather than the season.
Erosion comes from bank cutting on the rivers and bayous, sheet flow across bare clay after a hard rain, and ditch and canal scour. RipRap is angular stone for bank and shoreline armour and slope protection.
Rounded stone does not lock together, so it is not bank armour.

It depends on which layer you are building. 610 limestone is the compacted base for a drive, and the fines bind it so it hardens as it is rolled.
On top, #57 Limestone is the clean open graded surface stone. On ground this wet, the base has to shed water before the surface stone goes down.
