Open the calculatorLouisiana Rock Supply handles gravel and aggregate delivery in Fort Polk, LA for two kinds of buyers: contractors working a job and homeowners fixing their own ground. Both usually start with 610 limestone, the crushed limestone base this market specifies by name.
The ground here is sandy loam over clay, so the material you put down has to suit the soil under it. The sections below weigh the options.
Base and driveway surfacing is where a project here begins, and 610 limestone leads it. Also called #610, 610 base, or CR610, it runs from stone dust up to about two inches, so the fines bind it and it hardens as it is rolled.
Use it for driveways, parking pads, shed and building pads, and the compacted layer under flatwork.
Crushed concrete, sold as recycled base or 610 concrete, is recycled Portland cement concrete crushed and screened to a dense graded size with the fines left in. Louisiana permits it as a Class II base course material.
It is a different product from crushed quarry stone.
For the surface layer, #57 limestone is the clean open graded size at about 3/4 inch with no fines. It drains, which suits a driveway surface and concrete work.
#57 Limestone and 610 Limestone are the two you will compare first.
Below #57 in size sits #67 stone, a clean stone for drainage trenches, pipe bedding and concrete. #67 Stone flows into tight spots that a coarser stone will not.
Where the ground is very wet, #4 crushed stone at roughly 1 1/2 inch is the coarse clean option for heavy drainage, erosion work and stabilising soft ground. #4 Crushed Stone is angular, so it interlocks rather than rolling.
Sand and soil cover the rest. Mason sand is the finest washed sand, for mortar, brick and block work and a smooth paver setting bed.
Top soil is the growing layer for lawns and beds over ground that is more often heavy clay than anything a lawn wants.
Across the northern and western uplands, the surface is sandy loam over Tertiary sands and clays, rolling rather than flat, with sandy loam ridges and clay in the draws. It is lighter and better drained than the southern half of the state.
The sandy loam surface takes water and the clay beneath it does not, so water moves sideways down the slopes and gathers in the draws. Slope, not a water table, is what moves it here.
That matters for what you put down. A base course over clay in a draw holds water differently than the same material on a ridge, and the drainage layer is the part that has to work.
Bare sandy slopes cut into gullies quickly once the cover is gone, and the draws scour. Riprap is angular stone for bank and slope armour.
Rounded stone does not lock together, so large river rock is not bank armour.
Work runs year round here. Wet clay in the draws is what stops a compaction pass, so that is the condition to watch.
Bulk material arrives by dump truck and the load is tipped in one pile on site. Have the drop area clear and reachable before the truck arrives, and know where you want that pile to land.
